Aims: Natural rubber latex (NRL) is used in the production of numerous rubber products found at home and at work. (This guideline is concerned particularly with issues relating to gloves, as these represent by far the main occupational use of latex). Latex allergy is an occupational health problem, particularly in healthcare where rubber products are commonly used. Symptoms of latex allergy range from rash, itchy or runny eyes or nose, sneezing, and coughing to chest tightness, shortness of breath and anaphylactic shock. The aim of this document is to provide an evidence-based guideline on the management of latex allergy (LA) in the workplace. It is intended to assist occupational and other healthcare professionals, managers, employees and other interested parties in providing advice on the occupational aspects of the management of latex allergy, based on current evidence.
Intended audience: Occupational and other healthcare professionals, managers and employees.
