Welcome to NHS Evidence - screening

Provided by NICE, NHS Evidence is a new service which will develop, enhance and expand the services that were previously provided by the National Library for Health (NLH). The NLH and its specialist libraries became part of NHS Evidence on 1 April 2009. Release 1 of the NHS Evidence portal and search engine went live on 30 April 2009 at www.evidence.nhs.uk.

As part of ongoing developments, the specialist libraries have changed their names and are, as a group, called specialist collections. This individual collection is now  NHS Evidence – screening,  and you will continue to be able to access all the content and features. The existing URL for the collection will remain for now, but is likely to change later in the year as the specialist collections become fully integrated with the NHS Evidence portal.

For more information about NHS Evidence, please follow this link to the NICE website: http://www.evidence.nhs.uk/AboutUs.aspx

Management and quality policy of the screening specialist collection

Screening programmes are public health services that need to be managed at the level of a large population to monitor quality effectively. In the UK, this is carried out by the National Screening Committee (NSC). The first task of the NSC is to use research evidence to identify programmes that do more good than harm; the second is to make policy recommendations about those programmes that will do more good than harm at a reasonable cost. In policy-making, the evidence for screening is often limited, because of the rarity of the conditions being screened for.

This specialist collection undertakes to find, organise and provide access to the best available evidence on screening. We have concentrated initially on the NSC policies, programmes and reports, and the secondary evidence produced or licensed by the NHS - the Cochrane Library, Health Technology Assessment (HTA) reports, NICE guidelines and Centre for Reviews and Dissemination abstracts (DARE). We also include UK and international Health Technology Assessments contained in the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination HTA database, and economic evaluations from the NHS Economic Evaluation database.

The website of the UK National Screening Committee was recently relaunched. The UK Screening Portal is the gateway to information on screening in the UK and is available at www.screening.nhs.uk

We welcome comments and feedback about the resources contained in the screening specialist collection, or on its future development. To fill in a feedback form, go to the Contact Us link in the index.
