GETTING STARTED

Welcome to the NHS Evidence RSS directory. This page describes how to use the directory to find RSS feeds and their news content. You can either browse through categories, or use the search box to find feeds and news stories that match your specialty and interests.

Browse

The directory organises feeds by categories, the top levels of which are displayed in the category tree on the left. Click the ‘+’ symbols to reveal category subtopics and click the category name to perform a search for feeds related to that topic.

Search

Type your terms into the search box and click the search button. Entering several terms into the search box will find records that match against all of the words in any order. To search for a phrase use quotation marks around the terms.

Enter some text and click the Search button. Newsfeed titles, descriptions and categories are searched.

Search Results

Results are sorted chronologically and then grouped by feed, so the most recent post appears first followed by other matching content from the same feed. This provides a feed-based view of results, which you can use to decide if a feed is worth adding to your personalised My Update.

From the search results page the following activities are available. Feed level:
  • Preview information about the feed and all the current items in a feed
  • Add the feed to your personalised My Update
News story level:
  • See more detail about the story (if available)
  • Store the news story in your personalized My Links
  • Email the news story to a colleague

Preview feed

This feature allows you to see the current content of a feed, it is unfiltered by your search terms.

Email to colleague

A useful tool in the RSS Directory is the ability to share useful feeds with your colleagues and userbase. From the Results Display screen, each entry in the Directory has an "Email to friend" link.

To Email details of a particular feed to a colleague, simply click the "Email to a Friend" link. This facility works alongside Microsoft Outlook and will open a blank email automatically, with some introductory text and a link to the details of the feed. To complete, simply enter the destination email address, you can also add some extra text into the email body if you wish, and click send.

Your colleague will then be able to click on the link within the email to be taken to a page displaying the details of this feed and allow them to view and/or subscribe to this feed in their RSS Newsreader/Aggregator in the usual way (for more details, view our Subscribing to a feed page).
