2009 Oral Cancer Annual Evidence Update

This week is Mouth Cancer Awareness Week and NHS Evidence - oral health presents our 2009 Oral Cancer Annual Evidence Update. It provides a summary of the best available clinical information (systematic reviews, meta-analyses and guidelines) published since October 2008. The information is also available as a pdf file.
The Update includes a commentary on the evidence by Dr David Conway, Clinical Senior Lecturer at Glasgow University Dental School and Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health at NHS National Services Scotland (NSS).
What's New in Oral Health

5 November 2009: The latest data on the number of new NHS dental contracts signed and rejected and the approximate service value of these contracts expressed in units of dental activity (UDA) is now available. The report notes that 86.9 million UDA were commissioned in the quarter to 30 September, an increase of 2.5 million or 2.9% compared to the previous quarter.
21 October 2009: A new report reveals that 69% of five-year old children are free of obvious dental decay. The survey is based on the examination of nearly 140,000 five year old children from state schools across 147 of 152 PCTs in England during the 2007/2008 academic year. [More]
8 October 2009: The latest issue of the Cochrane Library (Issue 4 2009) includes 14 new or updated systematic reviews of interest to oral health professionals. [More]
8 October 2009: The latest issue of the MHRA's Drug Safety Update includes a discussion entitled Smoking and smoking cessation: clinically significant interactions with commonly used medicines. [More]
30 September 2009: The European Medicines Agency has completed a review on the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with the use of bisphosphonates. The Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) concluded that there is an increased risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients using these medicines. [More]
24 September 2009: The Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine has added recordings of its training sessions to You Tube. [More]
24 September 2009: The General Dental Council (GDC) is encouraging appropriately trained, qualified and experienced dentists, who wish to be specialists in special care dentistry, to make their applications to the specialist list as soon as possible. [More]
14 September 2009: Dental professionals’ annual retention fee (ARF) will stay the same for a third year running following a decision made by the Council of the General Dental Council. [More]
3 September 2009: The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced new advice on over-the-counter (OTC) medicines containing codeine and dihydrocodeine (DHC) to minimise the risk of overuse and addiction. [More]
29 August 2009: The MHRA is undertaking a public consultation on the sale, supply and administration of medicines by dental hygienists and dental therapists under a Patient Group Direction. [More]

For the Update we identified and critically appraised all oral health systematic reviews published during 2008.
