Last year the NPSA (National Patient Safety Agency) set about reducing the risks associated with taking oral methotrexate. A lengthy consultation about the documentation linked to this process is approaching its conclusion.   The original material is available on the NPSA site. Watch this space!

  • Do epidural injections work?
  •   

    Over the years, epidural injections have had a mixed press.  Although widely used in the management of radicular symptoms in the lower limb, conflicting reports have made it difficult to be clear about their efficacy.  A new study reported by Arden et al in 228 patients with unilateral sciatica has shown that they do work but...the benefit is in the short term only. It seems likely that the treatment will continue to be offered for short-term pain relief.

  • "Rheumatology" Editorial about GPwSIs

    There are now many GPs with a Special Interest in Rheumatology nationally.  These posts have sometimes been established without the role and reponsibilities having been clearly worked out.  This editorial by Hay and Adebajo reviews the current state of affairs and steps being taken to decide on core competencies that should be required for instance.  The part that this role may play in the forthcoming Musculoskeletal Service Framework is also briefly mentioned.

  • Hip protectors probably don't work
  •    A recent systematic review from the Cochrane Collaboration suggests that this device probably does not provide the reduction in risk of hip fracture in older people that had been hoped.  More...
