Tips on using this site
There are two main ways to find information in the Mental Health Specialist Collection, navigating the site via the left-hand topic menu and using the search function.
Navigating this site
- Select a topic from the topic headings in the left-hand menu (adult conditions or child and adolescent conditions). The topic hierarchy will expand to display more sub-headings. You might need to scroll down the page to find the topic you want.
- After you have selected a topic, the screen will return to the top of the page to display all the resources for your chosen topic heading. This means this heading may no longer be visible in the left-hand menu without scrolling. However, the selected topic heading is also shown near the top of the page in the "You searched for the category" field.
- The site map is an alternative way to navigate the site. With it you can view all levels of the topic hierarchy on a single web page and access resources for a chosen topic using the links. The site map can be accessed at any time from the button at the bottom of the left-hand menu.
If you only have 5 minutes!
- Every topic within adult conditions or child and adolescent conditions has an introductory article which has been written to introduce a health professional to the condition. These articles cover the basics of diagnosis, management, treatment, referral and information for the patient and family.
- You can find introductory articles by selecting the topic of interest in the left-hand menu and then following the links you find on the right-hand side of the screen.
- These articles are also available as PDF downloads.
Searching this site
- Enter your search term(s) in the search box above the left-hand topic menu. The drop-down menu to the right of the search box enables you to search other parts of the NSH Evidence as well as the Mental Health Specialist Collection.
- The search will retrieve all resources with your search term(s) in the title, author and/or description fields.
- If you find a relevant entry and would like to retrieve other similar resources, on the description page that describes that resource you can click on a Topic or Publisher to find other items that share that characteristic.
The results display
- In common with other NSH Evidence, there are five tabs in the results display for different types of resource:
- Guidance and pathways - this section includes NICE clinical practice guidelines and health technology appraisals.
- Evidence - this section includes Cochrane systematic reviews and mental health content from Clinical Evidence.
- Reference - this section includes WHO mental health in primary care guidelines.
- Education/CPD
- Patient Information
- In the results the last tab to be selected is initially used for the display. You may find this tab contains no resources for that topic and you will have to click on other tabs to display any matches. Remember that the total number of records matched is displayed above the tabs, and the number of matches for each tab is displayed as the number in parentheses after the tab name.
Sorting your results by publication type or date
- In the results display, you can search within your results by using the Search results options on the right hand side of the page.
- You can also sort by title, publisher, publication date, or publication type.
- Hit 'GO' to see the results.
