INFLUENCING SKILLS

The National Library for Health commissioned ScHARR to conduct a survey on influencing and negotiating skills.

Read the Results and Analysis of Survey Responses produced by Andrew Booth and Anthea Sutton, ScHARR in November 2008.

Influencing skills workshop

Commissioned by NLH, this workshop was designed to helpstaff acquire the knowledge and skills to gain "the power to maximise positive outcomes through a process of engagement, discussion, and mutual understanding."

A total of twelve face to face Influencing Skills Workshops were run in 2009. At least one workshop will took place in each of the 10 English Strategic Health Authority areas.

Key workshop objectives

To enable participants:

  • to consider the dynamics of a negotiation / influencing situation
  • to discuss strategies that they have successfully/unsuccessfully adopted
  • to further reflect and practise their influencing skills
  • to learn some practical strategies for improving their personal influencing skills
  • to action plan for ongoing professional and personal development

At the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • have a better understanding of the dynamics of effective influence and negotiation;
  • have developed practical strategies for their own use in order to become more effective leaders, and
  • be more confident in raising their profile, and communicating the benefits of Library and Knowledge Services at a senior level.

The workshop was fast-paced, engaging, and interactive, and used a number of different training methodologies. [download the workshop programme]

Influencing Skills Learning Resources

The resources used for the workshop, including powerpoint presentations and handouts, are now available from the Learning Resources for Influencing Skills page in the Tools for Library Staff section.
